Hiking the Hooker Track

If you're looking for an unforgettable day tramp in Aotearoa the Hooker Track in Mount Cook National Park is a must-do, offering breathtaking views of the Aoraki and the Hooker glacial lake whilst still being accessible for all trampers.

Location: White Horse Hill Campground, Mount Cook Village

Distance: 10 kilometres

Time: 3-4 hours (leave time for photos!)

Difficulty: All levels, well-maintained and marked track.

The track begins with through alpine meadows and across breathtaking swing bridges, before revealing stunning views of the Hooker glacial lake filled with icebergs and Aoraki towering above the Southern Alps. At the end of the track, you'll reach the Hooker Glacier Terminal Lake, where you can get up close and personal with the glacier. The glacier is a stunning sight to behold, and the sound of the ice cracking and falling into the lake is truly unforgettable. Keep reading for my top tips on how to make this beautiful walk even more enjoyable!

Top Tips:

  1. Go in the morning! Not only is the track less busy, but the sun will be shining onto Aoraki and the Hooker lake instead of being behind it - much better for those awesome photos you’re planning.

  2. Pack a warm jacket. Even on a hot day there can be a chilly breeze coming off the glacial lake, and you want to be able to sit by the water and stare at the icebergs in comfort not shivering!

3. Wear comfy shoes! Although the track is well maintained and marked it is still 10km so make sure you’re wearing comfy walking shoes.

4. Pack water and snacks. This walk can often take longer than expected due to all the beautiful views you just have to stop and admire, so make sure you’ve got enough food and water to keep you going.

5. And finally take a pair of togs… if you’re feeling brave!
